Wedgwood offers 'Christmas dinner in a box', for the third year
Wedgwood restaurant in Edinburgh’s Canongate has announced that it is offering its 'Christmas dinner in a box' for the third year running.
The boxes were originally devised by Wedgwood’s chef, Paul Wedgwood, during the pandemic.
This year, there are two boxes available – one for meat eaters, containing a roast turkey, mallard breast or pressed ham hock main course – and a vegetarian version, which has a sweet potato, chestnut and spinach rotolo, with all the traditional trimmings, as the main-course choice. Gluten-free and vegan options are also available.
Initially, demand for the boxes meant that Paul, and wife, Lisa, had to close Wedgwood to make time and space to prepare all the boxes. Last year they undertook the preparation in a kitchen unit in Leith, which meant the restaurant could stay open.
Originally, the boxes were only available for customers in Edinburgh and Lothians. They can now be delivered throughout the UK. There is no delivery charge.
This year, the specially insulated boxes will be sent out on Monday 21 December, for delivery by Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December. Customers across Edinburgh and other EH postcodes, can, if they wish, collect their box from the restaurant on either the 23 or 24 December, or either Lisa and Paul, or one of their team members can hand deliver the box to customers’ homes on Christmas Eve:
“We're boxing clever again this Christmas,” said Paul: "Our ‘Wedgwood the Restaurant At Home Festive Box’ is an established product, which we're immensely proud of.
“The designated cook can often miss out on the fun of the day, when they’re busy cooking for everyone and worrying about timings.
“Our regular (with a meat main course) box contains an easy-to-plate cold starter of smoked Shetland salmon, served with pink grapefuit, fennel, crème fraiche and Douglas-fir honey, followed by a Jerusalem-artichoke pancetta and lentil velouté. Both of these dishes are ready in minutes.”
Some of the other courses in the regular box include a roe-deer pastrami, with celeriac remoulade, sweet and sour brambles, bone marrow and parsley; the main course of roast turkey, mallard breast or pressed ham hock; and two desserts – a Grand Marnier pannacotta and a Christmas pudding with XO rum sauce:
“It’s all super easy, with one course gently heating as you enjoy the previous one,” said Paul: “You can choose different mains for different people. In a box for two, for example, one person can opt for the turkey while the other guest has the mallard breast.”
He added: “We’ve had very positive feedback on our box for one, as those dining alone on the big day certainly shouldn't miss out on something tasty to treat themselves to.”
The boxes cost £90 for one person, £180 for two or £270 for three people.
