Abbotsford, the historic home of Sir Walter Scott, near Melrose, in the Borders, has been named Best Visitor Attraction at the 2026 South of Scotland Thistle Awards, recognising its contribution to Scotland’s tourism offering and its role in preserving one of the country’s most distinctive literary heritage sites.

The award celebrates Abbotsford’s enduring appeal as a place where visitors can explore the life, imagination and legacy of the novelist, poet and historical storyteller whose work helped shape how Scotland was understood around the world.

The house and its collections offer a unique insight into Sir Walter Scott’s world, while the surrounding landscape reflects the countryside that inspired him. Today, Abbotsford continues to welcome visitors keen to discover the man behind the stories and experience a significant part of Scotland’ s cultural heritage first-hand.

The win is also an accolade for the Borders and its wider visitor economy, highlighting the quality of Scotland’s attractions beyond its major cities and showcasing the cultural experiences that draw visitors to the country’s regions.

Abbotsford was recognised alongside businesses, attractions and individuals from across the Borders and Dumfries & Galloway.

The South of Scotland Thistle Awards, delivered by the South of Scotland Destination Alliance and supported by South of Scotland Enterprise and VisitScotland, celebrate excellence across the region’s visitor economy. Winners will now go forward to represent the south of Scotland at the national Scottish Thistle Awards finals in November.

Dr Matt Thompson, curator at Abbotsford said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Abbotsford has been recognised as Best Visitor Attraction.

“Sir Walter Scott’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the Borders, and it’s a privilege to share his remarkable home, collections and landscape with visitors from near and far.

“Abbotsford is a place full of stories, imagination and discovery, and our team works hard to make that history feel alive and relevant to everyone who walks through the door. This award is a real testament to their passion and dedication, and to the incredible staff and volunteers who help us welcome visitors to the region.

“As a charitable trust, we have a responsibility to care for Abbotsford and preserve its unique heritage for future generations, while ensuring people can continue to enjoy and connect with this very special place. Support from our visitors is vital to helping us protect Scott’s legacy and share it with the world.

“We’re incredibly proud to represent the south of Scotland and show what makes this part of the country so special. We hope this recognition encourages even more people to come and discover Abbotsford for themselves.”
