The gardens of Edinburgh’s New Town

The Scotland’s Gardens Scheme is offering the chance to see some of the New Town’s beautiful gardens, in June.

The first opportunity is on 8 June, from 2-5pm, when the Dean Gardens are open to the public.

Founded in the late 1860s, by local residents who wanted to improve the area, the gardens span nine acres of woodland, lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers, along the Water of Leith.

It costs £5 to see the sights of Dean Gardens, including the Dean Bridge, St Bernard’s Well and the weir at the Dean Village.

Next, a garden on Learmonth Place is open on 15 June, from 12-6pm. Described as "a unique reimagining of a city-centre, mid-terrace, walled garden", it showcases two ponds, a pergola and trees - all in a relatively small space. The price of admission is £6.

Then, on 22 June, it's the turn of the Stockbridge trail. This runs between Logie Green Gardens and India Place, where the gardeners will be available to talk through their horticultural choices, between noon and 4.30pm. Admission is £8.50, and plants are for sale at Logie Green Gardens.

Entry to all of the gardens is free for children.

The scheme raises money for charity, by “encouraging, promoting and supporting garden openings, whilst making the whole experience inspiring, rewarding and enjoyable for all involved”.
