Return of free outdoor film festival

Edinburgh’s free outdoor movie weekend, Square Cinema, is returning in June, bringing three days of big-screen entertainment to the heart of the city.

Set in the picturesque surroundings of St Andrew Square Garden, the event is funded by Essential Edinburgh Business Improvement District along with train operator LNER, which continues its headline support, along with event partners Heineken 0%, Costa Coffee and Point A Hotels.

The movie weekend starts on Friday 12 June, with 'Swayze Night', when movie goers can enjoy The Outsiders, Dirty Dancing and a 35th-anniversary screening of Point Break. Saturday’s films include Back to the Future and The Adventures of Tintin, to name a few. Sunday's entertainment includes a 15th-anniversary screening of Bridesmaids.

Emily Campbell Johnston, senior manager, marketing & communications for Essential Edinburgh, said: “Since our first free film event in 2011, Square Cinema has developed into one of the largest, free outdoor-cinema events in the UK. It is always fabulous fun and offers a unique and exciting communal film experience – accessible to all.”

The event operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
