New opening: The Cottage at Royal Terrace

A new dining destination is opening in May, in the form of The Cottage at Royal Terrace - a 19th century William Playfair building within Royal Terrace Gardens.

Originally built as a home for the gardener of Royal Terrace Gardens, The Cottage has stood since 1836.

The restaurant will focus on seasonal menus and local ingredients. Guests will arrive through a working kitchen garden, passing the herbs and produce that will feature in their meal. Menus will be shaped by ingredients from the garden, as well as from local foragers and suppliers of fresh fish, meat and produce.

Meat will be provided by The Free Company; organic fruit and vegetables from Phantassie Organic Produce and cheese from George Mewes.

The restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday. It offers a two-course lunch for £25; a short tasting menu from noon-6pm for £55; and the full, evening tasting menu is priced at £85.  All seating is at communal tables. The venue is also available for exclusive use, for private events.

Diners can look forward to dishes such as smoked trout tartlet with crème fraiche;

line-caught turbot with grapes, wild leeks and champagne; and chocolate tart with miso gel and candied walnuts.

Peter Adshead, whose career spans Michelin-starred restaurants and five-star hotels in the city is the new custodian of the building, taking on the role of director.

He said: “Every guest will walk through our kitchen garden and into The Cottage to a warm welcome. They will find interesting, carefully chosen wines and food that celebrates the very best of Scotland’s larder.

“The Cottage is a unique and special place and we will work hard to make every visit a special and memorable one.”
