Innes House – “a home mellow with age and hospitality”

The history, mystery and sheer beauty of Scottish castles places them at the top of the sightseeing list for many travellers.

Scotland is home to a few thousand or so, spread across the country – and while some offer the chance of a guided tour – other provide a picturesque and unforgettable setting for a holiday or celebratory occasion – including one in the far northeast of the country.

Around four hours’ drive from Edinburgh, 17th century Innes House, in the beautiful Moray countryside, ticks the boxes for those who have always wanted to experience the grandeur of staying on a historic Highland estate.

Set within 5000 acres of farmland, woodlands and landscaped gardens, in the land between Lossiemouth and the River Spey, Innes House is owned by the fifth generation of the Tennant family.

The castle is available for exclusive use, accommodating 38 people, across 20 individually designed bedrooms. With reception areas, large dining spaces, a whisky room, billiards room and gardens, it’s the ideal space, not just for holidays and celebratory occasions, but also for corporate meetings or for rural activity retreats.

Over the winter, the castle has undergone some refurbishment, to further enhance guests’ experience. The Tulip Room now features a large, luxurious, walk-in shower and a new four-poster bed and the floor of the East Ballroom has had its annual varnish, ahead of the summer’s events.

Work is also underway in the historic walled gardens, with plans for the kitchen garden to produce fresh fruit and vegetables for inclusion in menus for weddings, private events and house guests.

Guests looking to explore the area beyond the estate are spoiled for choice: the Moray Coast trail is a draw for walkers and cyclists, as well as those who prefer to enjoy the view from horseback; the beaches of Lossiemouth offer the chance of seeing the local dolphins; and the historic town of Elgin, on the banks of the River Lossie, is just a few miles away.
