Historic East Lothian estate says ‘I do’ to new glass atrium

A historic estate in East Lothian, once described by Robert Burns as “the most romantic sweet place I ever saw” is investing in a striking new glass atrium as demand for Scottish destination weddings continues to rise.

Dunglass Estate, home to the 15th-century Dunglass Collegiate Church and owned by the Usher family for generations, has secured a six-figure funding package from Bank of Scotland to help finance a bespoke, glass atrium roof above its courtyard.

Due for completion by February 2027, the new glass atrium will create a weatherproof event space that retains uninterrupted views of the night sky, allowing couples to celebrate beneath the stars while remaining sheltered from Scotland's unpredictable weather.

The investment comes as Dunglass sees rising interest from couples travelling from across the UK and overseas to marry in Scotland. The estate hosts around 60 weddings each year and has seen particularly strong demand from Europe, with more couples now choosing to extend celebrations across several days with family and friends.

The development will also help Dunglass expand its appeal as a year-round wedding destination, opening opportunities for winter weddings, festive celebrations and New Year events.

For owners Simon and Joyce Usher, who have lived on the estate with their children since 2006, the project represents the latest chapter in safeguarding one of Scotland's most romantic historic settings while ensuring it continues to evolve for future generations.

Designed by Scottish architects Mozolowski & Murray, the glass atrium will provide a flexible space for ceremonies, receptions and celebrations, complementing the estate's historic church, landscaped grounds and existing accommodation.

Simon Usher, owner of Dunglass Estate, said: “For centuries, Dunglass has been shaped by history, heritage and the people who have called it home. Through responsible stewardship, investment and innovation it is a place where heritage and progress exist side by side.

“Dunglass continues to evolve, welcoming new generations of visitors, guests and families who choose to celebrate life’s most meaningful moments here and become part of its ongoing story”.

Ross Penman, relationship manager at Bank of Scotland, said: “Dunglass Estate is a fantastic example of a family business successfully balancing heritage with innovation.”
