Edinburgh business introduces service to support people affected by dementia
Edinburgh-based media-conversion business, Transfermagic is supporting people with dementia and other memory-related conditions to share memories from their younger years, through reminiscence therapy.
The service offered by Transfermagic can help to trigger memories of the past by converting old cine film reels and videotapes, digitising photos and slides, and transferring old audio tapes into modern digital formats, also preventing treasured footage and pictures from getting lost.
Business owner Pete Harper has experienced the devastating effects of dementia in his own family in recent years and is now using his skills to help others with memory-related conditions to boost their wellbeing.
He said: “Helping families to share valuable memories is a wonderful thing to be able to play a part in.”
After being rejected by his high-street bank, Pete recently secured a £23,000 loan through the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme and DSL Business Finance to help with futureproofing and diversifying the business further. Plans include the introduction of workshops to teach people how to edit videos and working with local artists to digitise their collections.
Start Up Loans has supported more than 1,000 entrepreneurs in Edinburgh since it began in 2012, delivering more than £11.8m in loans to new business owners.
