Dumfries and Galloway may be one of Scotland’s less-visited areas, but it has much to offer, with over 200 miles of coastline, rolling hills, ancient woodlands and the biggest forest park in the UK – a major draw for stargazers.
Visitors will find plenty of choice for accommodation, from guest houses and hotels, through to camping sites, to name a few options. But if you’re looking for something special, how
about a holiday in the grounds of a 17th-century castle?
Drumlanrig Castle and country estate, in Thornhill, offers the opportunity to stay in castle apartments, such as the East Wing, which features a spiral staircase and views towards the Castle. Cottages on the estate are available too, such as The Montagu, which has a hot tub, and is close to walks and trails.
The Castle is owned by the Duke of Buccleuch, who has opened up his Georgian home, Dabton House, for visitors seeking the perfect venue for large family gatherings, holidays, weddings or corporate retreats. Located on the Queensberry Estate, just 10 minutes from the Castle, it has 11 bedrooms, a four-acre garden, a grass tennis court and a sauna and treatment room. The interiors blend contemporary design with historic features, and the House retains the ambience of a family home.
The grounds of the Castle and estate will also host the Galloway Country Fair, which celebrates the best of rural life in the Dumfries and Galloway region, on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August.
Anna Fergusson, estate director, says: “Following the success of last year’s event, we look forward to an even more exciting weekend this year. Visitors can expect the return of much-loved favourites - from main ring entertainment and local artisan stalls to the ever-popular gundog scurry - alongside some exciting new entertainers.
"We are sure the event will appeal to both locals and those from further afield wanting a taste of what Dumfries & Galloway can offer.”
