A new, online magazine for and about businesses of all sizes, in Edinburgh and beyond
Mike Davis of My Probate Partner has won his third award since he launched the business in 2020.
The most recent addition to the accolades he has attracted to date is the ‘Scotland Established Business of the Year 2024’, one of the Allica Bank Great British Entrepreneur awards.
My Probate Partner is an online platform that helps people tackle probate − the administration requirements that arise when someone has died.
Before he started the business, Mike worked in the hospitality industry, including running his own restaurant in the Austrian Alps. He switched into the legal industry to work with his father, in his legal-auditing business, and trained as a law accountant.
Reflecting on what inspired him to then set up his own business, which has now grown to a team of six, Mike explained: “After years of auditing solicitors and setting their fees, and having seen thousands of cases, I came to realise that the majority of people didn't need to use a solicitor. I knew there had to be another option.”
Mike said that some of the main advantages of using his firm include access to expert support, that costs less than a solicitor, and communications in plain English. The client also has control of the process, as they are undertaking the tasks themselves. He added that more than 800 families have collectively managed more than £150m of inheritances, through My Probate Partner’s services.
As a tip, he added that it is important for people to take their time and evaluate their options, to establish how best to proceed with probate tasks: "Using a solicitor may be the right decision if the person responsible doesn't have the time and patience for administrative work or if there are fractured family relationships."
My Probate Partner's previous awards include ‘best probate support service provider’ in 2023 and ‘best DIY probate service’ in 2022 from the SME News UK Legal Awards. Mike was also runner up in the ‘customer-service champion’ category in the 2022 British Wills and Probate Awards and in its ‘best use of technology’ award in 2020.
