Sometimes you just can’t get far enough away from the hustle and bustle of city life. That’s when you might jump on a plane and head for a different country. But if you’d rather find your respite closer to home, you could head for Skye.
The island has plenty of beauty to offer, whether you prefer dramatic sights or a gentler, peaceful backdrop in your quest to forget about work and unwind.
If tranquility is top of your list, Coruisk House could be the ideal base for your Skye sojourn. Clare Winskill, who co-owns the hotel with her husband, Iain, says: “Our guests choose to stay at Coruisk House for its quiet, remote setting on the southern edge of Skye – away from the main tourist routes but close to stunning natural landmarks like Loch Coruisk, the Cuillin Ridge and Elgol Harbour, with its view over Loch Scavaig.
“Coruisk House offers a place to completely switch off and relax, to walk coastal and mountain trails and enjoy exceptional local food and wine. It’s also an ideal base for coastal hikes; boat trips; stargazing under dark skies; and wildlife watching – you could see seals, eagles and deer,” she adds.
The hotel has a four-star AA Restaurant with Rooms rating and the restaurant has an AA Rosette for dining quality. Ingredients are sustainably sourced from local producers and farmers, and the dinner menu changes daily, featuring the best of the island’s seasonal offerings.
Some of the treats that diners might find on the menu include langoustines and lobsters from nearby Loch Scavaig, mussels rope-grown in Loch Eishort and hand-dived scallops from Sconser, as well as wild venison and Soay lamb.
Coruisk House is also home to Skye Fine Wines, which offers a range of wines – mainly Burgundies – but also sparkling wines from Sussex, as well as Italian white wines, supplying, as Clare and Iain confirm, “the finishing touch” to guests’ dining experience. Wines can also be ordered and collected or delivered to other locations in the Highlands.
Rooms start at £210 per night in the hotel, with the cost of the self-catering accommodation in the hotel’s thatched cottage next door starting at £195 per night.
