A young filmmaker from East Lothian is gaining recognition after his short film Battered was selected for the Oxford Shorts Film Festival 2026. He has also been nominated for the festival’s Early Career Filmmaker Award.
Michael Inglis, who grew up in Tranent and studied film at Edinburgh Napier University, directed the short which will have its UK premiere at St John’s College, University of Oxford, on Sunday 12 April.
The short centres on Jack, an up-and-coming MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter dealing with the aftermath of a brutal loss and questioning whether chasing the dream of becoming a champion is worth the cost. The film examines the psychological pressure, identity struggles and personal sacrifices that often sit behind combat sports:
“Having Battered selected for Oxford Shorts and nominated for the Early Career award is hugely encouraging for everyone involved in the film,” said Inglis: “It is a festival that champions new voices and emerging filmmakers.”
The film will be screened in the auditorium of St John’s College, during the festival’s Upcomers programme, where the Early Career Filmmaker Award will also be announced.
