As the festive season approaches, so does the question of what to buy for the most important people in your life.
For some, that present might be tech, for others it could be whisky or cashmere. But to show loved ones how special they are, there’s one particular gift that never loses its sparkle. And that’s, of course, jewellery.
It can be tricky making the choice, though: everyone has their own individual preferences, and you want to get it right.
That’s where professional knowledge can make all the difference. So, we had a chat with leading jewellery expert, Clare Blatherwick, to find out more about how to select the perfect piece of Christmas jewellery – for others or for yourself.
Clare set up her own jewellery consultancy business in 2017, having built a glittering career, which started at an international gemstone dealer in London’s Hatton Garden. She then went on to work with some of the UK’s most prestigious jewellers. This was followed by a role as head of jewellery for Bonhams, which included travelling the world, sourcing pieces for auction.
Nowadays, Clare provides her services across Edinburgh and East Lothian, where she has a studio in North Berwick. She has a team of three colleagues (four if we count Arthur the dog).
Here’s what Clare revealed in her chat with us, about jewellery trends, the best festive gifts and what to wear to Christmas and New Year parties. She also shared news of her next event, on 22 and 23 November, where visitors are welcome to drop by to meet the experts and browse a selection of curated jewellery, while enjoying some festive drinks.

Why is jewellery still the most special gift that people can receive at Christmas?
Jewellery is such a special gift from a loved one or a present for yourself because it carries deep personal meaning. Unlike many presents, it’s worn close to the skin and becomes part of someone’s story – a reminder of love, celebration or a very special moment.
At Christmas, we often reflect on what matters most, and a beautifully crafted piece becomes more than an object – it becomes a symbol of connection and often, a future heirloom. We are lucky to work with clients at those landmark moments in their lives.

What are current trends in jewellery – and what is most popular?
We’re seeing a real celebration of individuality. Signet rings, often engraved with initials or meaningful symbols, are having ‘a moment’ – and they’re not just for men. Women are wearing them too. As a twist on the traditional versions, they are often set with stones nowadays.
Yellow gold continues to reign supreme, even with its current market price, thanks to its warmth and vintage appeal. Chunky chains, celestial motifs and colourful gemstones, like tourmaline and spinel, are also in demand.

What makes vintage jewellery special – and what are the attractions of contemporary pieces?
Vintage jewellery carries the craftsmanship, style and stories of another era. There’s
something magical about wearing a piece that’s lived a life before you.
Contemporary pieces offer the chance to express who you are today. They can be tailored to your lifestyle, your aesthetic and your values – especially when made bespoke or by independent designers like us.
I love how both vintage and modern pieces can coexist in a jewellery collection, each telling a different chapter of your story.

What are your own favourite gemstones, metal and jewels?
I’m drawn to gems with character. I like spinels for their vibrant colours, sapphires for their incredible range and old-cut diamonds for their romantic sparkle. I also adore unusual stones like chrysoberyl or star sapphires – they have a kind of magic that makes them feel truly one of a kind.
In terms of metal, the jewel design and the gems dictate that for me. I have no issue with wearing a combination of different coloured metals.
It's too difficult to answer which jewels are my favourite, but I have a soft spot for Art Deco and early 20th-century pieces.

What would you recommend as the perfect jewellery gift for Christmas?
With Christmas just around the corner, our ready-to-gift pieces are the way to go – and
there’s so much joy to be found in choosing something meaningful and beautiful.
For a partner, a vintage piece with a story – perhaps a romantic, old-cut diamond pendant or a gold signet ring makes a heartfelt and timeless gift.
For siblings or close friends, think playful and personal, such as colourful gemstone studs that reflect their personality. Our elegant and versatile Harmony Collection earrings are a perfect choice, featuring removable pearl drops, so that you can dress them up or down. They’re ideal for someone who loves timeless style with a modern twist.
And for the hard-to-buy-for? A beautifully wrapped jewellery voucher gives them the joy of choosing something they truly love – and maybe even booking a studio visit to us in the new year.

What is your advice for customers thinking about ‘popping the question’ over
Christmas?
Christmas proposals are so romantic – there’s already magic in the air. But if you haven’t
started the bespoke process yet (it’s a bit late in the year for that by November), don’t worry – there’s still a beautiful way to make it meaningful.
Many of our clients choose to propose with a temporary ring – even something playful like a Haribo ring – to mark the moment, then they come to us in the New Year to design the perfect piece together. It’s a lovely way to keep the surprise element while ensuring the final ring is truly personal.
We also love sourcing vintage engagement rings – they’re full of character, charm and
history, and often feature craftsmanship that’s hard to find today. There is still time for that.
Whether you’re planning a surprise or choosing the ring together, the key is to take your
time. This is the most important jewel you’ll ever buy, and it’s worth getting it just right
rather than rushing.
How long does it take to create a bespoke piece of jewellery?
While it depends on the complexity, a bespoke ring typically takes 6-10 weeks to create. That includes design consultations, sourcing stones, crafting the piece and any final tweaks. For something truly intricate or if you’re sourcing rare, vintage elements, it can take a little longer, but it’s always worth the wait.

What do you recommend as ideal pieces to buy for Christmas and New Year parties, or festive work events?
Statement earrings are a go-to – they instantly elevate any outfit and frame the face
beautifully. A bold cocktail ring or a layered gold necklace can also add festive flair without being over the top. For work events, I love pieces that are elegant but have a twist – like a vintage brooch on a blazer or a sleek bangle with a hidden engraving.
What other services do you offer?
Our popular ‘Jewellery Box Detox’ is one of my favourite offerings because it’s all about
rediscovery. Most of us have inherited, gifted or forgotten pieces tucked away in drawers, and this service helps unlock their stories and potential.
During a one-to-one appointment, I guide clients through their personal collection –
identifying what they have, offering advice on value and provenance and exploring options for redesign, repair or resale. It’s a chance to fall in love with your jewellery all over again.
Whether it’s reimagining a family heirloom or simply understanding what to keep, gift or let go of, the process is incredibly empowering. It’s a wonderful way to gain clarity and hone your collection into pieces you will love and wear.
