Frédéric and Gaëlle Roger launched their independent, family business, Chez Roger, in 2019, on a mission to celebrate “the enduring spirit of the Auld Alliance.”

This takes the form of a traditional, French épicerie fine on Colinton Road: “We’re passionate about bringing the authentic taste of France to the heart of Scotland,” Gaëlle explains.

Chez Roger has around 500 different products in store and the shop’s fans have their favourites, such as provençal herbs, artisan hot sauces and chocolate Florentines, all of which have recently been restocked.

Frédéric and Gaëlle come from the Franche-Comté region in northeastern France, near the Swiss border: “It’s renowned for its specialities such as Comté cheese and Montbéliard smoked sausages,” says Gaëlle.

She reports that the most popular items in the shop include artisan cheeses from this region, as well as charcuterie; a French sweet, anis de Flavigny (said to have been created in 1591); and wines such as an organic crémant d'Alsace – a best-seller since the shop first opened.

In addition to French groceries; sweet and savoury treats; and fine wines, Chez Roger also stocks items such as Merino wool bérets, natural Marseille soaps and wine glasses: “We meticulously source the very best, from reputable producers who share our values of quality, sustainability and authenticity,” Gaëlle emphasises.

While there might be a second shop at some point in the future, for now, the focus for 2025 is on expanding the online side of the business.
