An online magazine for and about small businesses, micro businesses, sole traders, freelancers - and bigger businesses
Pekoe Tea has added to its extensive range of teas with three new Scottish versions: ‘five gold rings’, a blend of teas from five tea gardens across the east coast of Scotland; ‘Ivan chai’, a herbal infusion grown and processed at the Kinnettles tea garden near Forfar, Angus; and ‘Scottish afternoon blend’, which is 10 per cent Scottish-grown tea, blended with Assam, Keemun and Sri Lankan black teas. All are hand-picked, hand-processed and hand-packed.
This increases Pekoe Tea’s selection of Scottish-grown teas to four, having previously launched its ‘Kinnettles gold’ tea, also grown in Forfar.
This is not the only Scottish theme at Pekoe Tea: its teas combined with Scotland’s national drink are particularly popular: “Our whisky-flavoured teas are our biggest seller,” reported Jon Cooper, founder and owner of the business, along with his wife, Esther: “We make these in small batches, using single-malt Scotch whisky, at our factory in Leith.”
They are preparing for a busy 2025, as Jon explained: “Our teas are doing very well in Japan, so we will be working on increasing promotion and sales there. We are also improving our packaging and will be rolling out new labels and boxes throughout the year.”
He added: “We will be changing several of our teas to organic and by the end of next year, we hope to be well on the way to B Corp certification.”
Summing up the secret of Pekoe Tea’s success, Jon said: “We make luxury teas with the best ingredients we can get, and we do it all in-house, which makes it affordable.”
All of the new, Scottish teas are available in-store, at Pekoe Tea on Leith Walk, or on the website. The labels for the packaging were designed by Edinburgh-based designer, Georgina Hart.
